CUJO Presents: A Symphony of Jazz
Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra
Sunday 19th February
Jazz just got hotter, as Symphonic Jazz hits West Road! Feel the heat of roasting rhythms and scorching solos with CUJO's barnstorming new fusion of classy jazz and the epic symphonic. Under the baton of Maestro Stuart Barr, let your pulse soar to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue (in original jazz band scoring, featuring pianist Edward Reeve), Bernstein's brassy Prelude, Fugue and Riffs (featuring clarinettist Alex Card), and Ellington's fevered Night Creature, plus a set showcasing CUJO and its soloists.
CUJO is Cambridge University's 20-strong premiere jazz ensemble, fresh from recent performances at Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho, and the Cambridge Jazz Festival. They have collaborated with jazz legends such as Liane Carroll, Ian Shaw, Laurence Cottle and, most recently, Soweto Kinch. They have toured Berlin, Budapest, Prague and Istanbul, and recorded a CD in Bordeaux in 2014.
Stuart was musical director to Dame Shirley Bassey from 2009-15, conducting her worldwide from the Oscars to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, and producing her farewell album Hello Like Before. Conducting/arranging at the intersection of classical, jazz and popular music, he's conducted the LSO, RPO, BBC Concert and various international orchestras. The BBC recently broadcast his first Radio 4 documentary, on the life of transgender composer Angela Morley/Wally Stott. Now back at Cambridge on sabbatical, he's studying for an MBA.
