Fire and Ice

A concert celebrating violinist Steve Bingham’s 50th birthday

Sunday 16th June 2013

7:30 pm

"Fire and Ice"

An exciting concert to mark the 50th birthday of celebrated violinist and conductor Steve Bingham. Steve has brought together professional colleagues and local amateur players to form the 'Ad Hoc Sinfonia', which will perform, under Steve's baton, three great 20th century orchestral works.

The evening begins with "Cantus Arcticus", an amazing concerto for recorded birdsong and orchestra by Finnish composer Rautavaara. Taking us to the interval will be Stravinsky's dramatic and emotional "Firebird" Suite. Steve himself wil then perform two pieces for solo violin: Bach's superb D minor Chaconne - perhaps the greatest violin piece ever written - and a work written especially for him by Andrew Keeling, for electric violin and live looping! The concert ends with a rousing suite of film music pieces by British composer Michael Nyman.

Proceeds will go to the Cambridge-based sight charity Camsight.

Einojuhani Rautavaara – “Cantus Arcticus”, concerto for birdsong and orchestra
Igor Stravinsky – suite from “The Firebird” (1919 version)
Johann Sebastian Bach – Partita in D minor for solo violin
Andrew Keeling – “You Cut The String”, for live-looped electric violin
Michael Nyman – Suite of film music pieces
