‘Shih proved a terrific, imaginative partner, with enough lightness, speed and power.’ WASHINGTON POST

Two major works by Schumann are framed by three works composed in Paris: the fin-de-siecle lyricism of Hahn, better known as an opera composer; Martinu’s first cello sonata which was written in response to the news that his beloved Czech homeland had been invaded by the Nazis in 1939; and music by his pupil, Kapralova, who was much admired in her lifetime as both composer and conductor.

[Please note this programme has changed since the concert was first announced]
