Subtle refinement and emotional depth characterise the Nocturnes and Barcarolles of Fauré, pieces that record the composer's development throughout his career in an intimate and vivid way. The 5 Impromptus span almost as wide and varied a period of creative evolution and are brilliant, ambiguous and arresting. Indeed no less a pianist than Franz Liszt considered them very challenging to play.
The colour and lightness of the much loved Sonatine of Fauré's pupil Ravel is a refreshing contrast to the main items in this recital.
